How you decorate is personal. Have you ever found something that you want to keep forever? In all the designer magazines they say surround yourself with pretty things, with things you love, and things that make you happy. Well, mine is a booth from an old dance hall.
The Story of the Little Blue Booth
For years at my Grandparents’ lake cabin there was this pretty robin’s egg blue booth that I adored. It was the perfect color, but the story that went along with it gave it life and filled my heart. My Grandparents met at the local dance hall. My Grandma would take the train to town with her friends to go dancing. Doesn’t that sound like a movie? When you went to the dance hall you would write your name on the card and put it in the holder on the back of the booth, that way no one took your table while you were dancing. They would fit four couples in the booth at a time. Nothing like sitting close to your beau in a tiny booth I guess! Booth 4 and 5 were the ones they used most often, and my Grandpa apparently proposed in the booth.
I’ve tried to locate pictures from the old dance hall without much success, so my imagination will have to do. So fast forward a couple decades and the old dance hall was being torn down, and my stoic German Grandpa with a soft side bought a booth and some of the flooring. I think that speaks volumes to how much of a treasure those memories were. They took the booth out to the lake cabin and it sat in the cook house, and there it stayed.
Best Birthday Present
Fast forward another 20 plus years, and my Grandma gave me the booth for my 37th birthday. She knew how much it meant to me and how much I loved antiques and the stories that went with them. It had been weathered by the elements after being in the cook shack, but I didn’t care. And then she said, how about the one in the garage? Gasp…what? There’s a second one? My sweet Grandpa bought booth 5 AND booth 4, and number 4 had been tucked at the back of the garage under some things. It is beautiful, with character and is in its original paint.
Bringing it Home
My Dad loaded it on a trailer and home it came. It isn’t comfortable, takes up a lot of room, but I absolutely love it. Having it in our house makes me happy. The best part is that for almost 10 years we have had meals in it, celebrated birthdays and holidays in it, and best of all is that my twins sit in it every day to color, paint, draw, play playdough, and have snack. My Mom was kind enough to store at her house when I was moving, so we have pictures and memories at my parents too.
Cherish the Memories
So even though my Grandparents have been gone a few years, I have a daily reminder of how they loved each other a lifetime. So it checks off all the boxes…I love it, its pretty, and it makes me happy. I wish beautiful #4 could tell me the stories that she’s been a part of. The best part is that the love of my life supports how important it is to me, and when I doubted we had room to keep it he said no, the booth stays. I’m off to make some more memories in our cozy little booth…what do you surround yourself with that warms your soul and makes you happy?
